Button Belle Monthly Review: June 2024
Welcome, fellow writers, editors, and language enthusiasts! It’s that time of the month again when I get to yap about how my month has gone.
Lots of fun things have happened this month, and not all are editing related.
Let’s get on with it then, shall we? June seems to have flown by!
This month has been quieter on the editing side, as we all know I’m still portfolio-building! But, it’s been exciting nonetheless.
Finally, I bit the bullet and applied for my membership with the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and am now a fledgling member. I’m excited to undergo their courses and tests to build my skillset and knowledge in an officially recognised educational body and climb the ranks to Advanced Professional Member someday.
On top of joining the CIEP, I also registered as an editor on Reedsy! Still waiting on clearance from the applications team, but I’m excited about what’s to come.
Over the course of the past few months, I realised that editing has brought back a lot of my creative energy – which has been stagnant since I was in secondary school – and has driven me back into creative writing. So in lieu of editing this month, I’ve been working excitedly on projects of my own!
Forever keeping my fingers crossed for more business in the coming months, but starting out is a slow business and I’m happy to wait for good things to come.
It’s been a slow month for reading since I’ve spent a lot more of my time writing, one of these months my reading bug is going to skyrocket and I’ll tune into my monthly review with a whole collection of books to review.
This month I have had the pleasure of reading Landis by Shelly Mack, and what a read it has been! I’ve always been a fantasy girl, whether it’s books, movies, games – if it’s fantasy, I’m devouring it. Landis has been a thrilling read about a world in danger of being haunted by a dark past. I almost found myself rooting for the antagonist on occasion.
Next up, I will be reading The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. Every last one of my reading friends has sung high praises of this book and I’m ravenous to pick it up.
Even though it’s been a slow month for editing, I’m still high on the excitement of this journey. Good things are coming, I just need to keep working at it!
I’ll see you next week for yet another instalment of the ‘Sophie Talks About Punctuation’ show. Until then:
Keep practising, keep learning, and most importantly, keep writing!
